Traveling with Sugar Gliders

Many of us take our sugar gliders with us when we leave our homes.  It may be a short trip to the store, an entire day out with friends, or a trip that involves overnight stays.  *Please be advised that as much as we love our sugar gliders, there are places that they are not permitted due to laws that pertain to certain types of establishments.

When traveling, either short term or long term, we should always keep their safety in mind. When traveling in a vehicle, your sugar gliders should be in a secure travel carrier that can be safely secured with the seat belt.  The carrier should be large enough for a pouch to hang while allowing room for the glider to climb out of the pouch.  The carriers do not have to be extremely large as this is typically during the day when they are sleeping and less active.  They should, however have the ability to get out of their pouch while still being safely secured in the carrier so they can potty when needed.

The carrier should be located in the center of the seat if possible out of direct sunlight. The sun beating into the car creates a lot of heat and can overheat your sugar glider. You may need to have a piece of fleece (or other light material) to drape over the carrier to provide shade from the sun.  You also want to ensure that the vents for heat or air conditioner are not blowing directly onto the carrier.

A travel water bottle is a must. This should have water from home in it and preferably one that you can close so it doesn't leak. If you don't have a bottle that closes, store the water bottle upside down in a cup holder.  Having a water bottle allows you to offer your sugar gliders a quick drink while you are out and about.  Healthy snacks are also good to bring along as well.

A bonding pouch that secures closed with a zipper is recommended. You can hang the bonding pouch (with the strap removed) in the carrier unzipped for them to sleep inside.  When you reach your destination, simply open the carrier, zip the pouch, replace the strap and your off for fun!
